MOSCONI CUP
Thorsten Hohmann declines his Team USA spot at the 2026 Mosconi Cup
The German-born player earned an automatic place with his Philippines Open run. In a statement on Facebook he says he is stepping aside for this year's event in Orlando.
Thorsten Hohmann has declined his place on Team USA for the 2026 Mosconi Cup. In a statement posted on Facebook, he said he wanted fans to hear it from him. The Cup is Nov 27–30 at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando.
Hohmann switched his allegiance to the United States last year, and his run to the last 16 at the Philippines Open moved him past Tyler Styer on the Team USA list, which would have given him his first Mosconi Cup for the Americans. In Manila he lost 10–0 to Francisco Sánchez Ruiz in the last 16.
What he said
- His reasons: He says that in practice he feels he is playing as well as ever, but that under tournament pressure he has not found the same freedom and consistency.
- Business: He says several new business ventures have also demanded considerable time and energy.
- Why Team USA: He describes himself as German-American, says the United States has been his home for more than twenty years, and says becoming an American citizen reflected the life he built there.
- This year only: He says the decision concerns this year's Mosconi Cup and that his pride in representing the United States is unchanged. He plans to keep working so that he is ready if another opportunity comes.
- Orlando: He wants Team USA to win, and says he would love to be there supporting them in person if he is in the United States.
What happens next
Rack 9 has not seen an announcement on how Hohmann's place will be filled. Captain Johan Ruijsink also names two wildcards, and Team Europe has won the Cup six years in a row, including 11–3 in London last year. We will update this story when Team USA confirms its lineup.
